I've said the same thing in Japan many times. They have the same idea that they need to import workers to keep the population growing to sustain economic growth. I know very little about economics, but it just seems common sense that the population could shrink considerably without the average income or the standard of living having to shrink.
If the country makes less money, but also has less people it evens out. GDPs don't have to be huge. Per capita is what counts...and a fairly equitable distribution. Not totally even, but not like America.
Money is a red herring. What matters is what is produced and what is consumed. This is why getting up in arms over the uneven distribution of wealth is also a waste. A billionaire may be worth a million times more than average joe with a net worth of $1000, but there's no fucking way he consumes a million times the resources as Joe. He doesn't eat a million times as much food or use a million times as much gas. If you took all his money and gave it to the poor, it wouldn't mean that there is suddenly tons of food for them and more land so they can have a big house out of the ghetto and lots of cheap gas so they could buy a couple cars. It would just mean everything gets more expensive.
That aside, most of the dollars in the world (or yen or pounds or whatever other buttfuck currency) exists because of someone's promise to generate those dollars plus a few more. This is the basis of all the major economies. It works on the small scale of you taking a loan to buy a car, and on the large scale of government debt. The model only works when the economy is growing (which generally requires population growth). Without growth, there is collapse, not just stagnation. That's the fundamental problem. It traps us in a place where we need growth, so we need more people to facilitate more consumption, but we also recognize that we're beginning to fuck up the world pretty bad because of that consumption. That leads to government programs that attempt to curb consumption and increase it at the same time, but sadly 99% of people don't have the mental capacity or focus to recognize this simple fact because they're fucking idiots who think their political party of choice can fix the unfixable.
