What's the point of using gloves when you can hold their head and knee them in the face. And if Hari would have connected with that round house kick, he would have snapped his neck.
The gloves are so you don't break your hands while punching.
The full thai rules fights are even more confusing, as you're allowed to elbow in those too, but are still made to wear gloves. However, as Irish said, one of the main reasons is to protect the fighter's hands.
