  I know he was'nt flying at terminal velocity but still he had good speed could have died. Most likely his hit was equivelent of driving at 30mph in a car while hitting straight on another car at about the same speed.

  i had a similar experience, though it wasn't a base jump and not nearly as bad as that.. we were jumpin out of a c-17. got spun about 20meters above ground and hand to make a quick adjustment for my PLF and when i let go of my risers i started to swing and instead of going in the direction of the wind i pretty much dropped straight down, tore 2 ligaments in my ankle and broke 2 of those tiny little bones
