Just to clarify further, whilst the Geneva Convention covers treatment of civilians in occupied countries, the US is not a signatory of the Ottowa Treaty which explicitly bans the use of anti-personal mines. Not to imply they've left them lying around so people will get blown up by them (as far as I know).
