Contrary to your opinion, I think this might be a very good way to raise a child. The child itself decides when to stop breastfeeding. This, in itself, teaches the child that must make decisions for themselves and live with those decisions.
I think the only real issue would be their social development amongst their peers, I know as children me and my sister would have ostracized those kids, if for nothing else their situation was unusual and something a young child in today's world would probably view as perverted.
