Income tax isn't the way to go. A national sales tax, say 20% would raise more money, then the current income tax system, because people spend more then they make. The US is a country of credit, and to make things fair, have people pay on what they spend, reward the frugal!

I don't sit on my ass, numbnuts, I work 6 days a week. I'm talking about people who have low paid jobs, not welfare grabbers. Your idea of fair taxation causes hardship amongst the folk who do the shit-kicker jobs. And before you say anything else stupid, we pay 17.5% sales tax and income tax of 20 to 40%, dependant on earnings.
But what if you don't tax a person income, and elimate all of the other taxes, all of them, everybody would make more money. Instead of getting paid 7,8,or 9 dollars an hour a business can pay out 14,15,or 16 dollars because there would be no pay roll tax. If I made $1100 for 2 weeks of work, instead of the government taking almost $300 of that from me I could keep it and still afford the normal stuff I buy.

A progressive national retail sales tax.
A prebate to ensure no American pays federal taxes on spending up to the poverty level.
