I ate deer two nights ago. I think what I didn't like about the vid was he shot 3 deer, didn't appear to bother tracking the second deer at all and didn't get off his ass the whole time. Responsible hunting is fine - going over quota, baiting, etc is not sustainable.

We destroy their habitat and plant genetically modified crops and subdivisions - then when deer eat the crops or get into people's garden they need to be killed off because they are over populated. Irish, I don't know where you get your crazy fear of animals - 128 deaths in North America in the whole 20th century from black and grizzly bears and 14 deaths from mountain lions over the same 1oo years. Coyotes - 20 to 30 known attacks on people ever documented - most due to people feeding them. We dislike deer because they wreck our crops and the best argument for calling them overpopulated is that they cause so many car accidents.

Coyotes, wolves, and bears are generally not a physical threat to humans. Of course, I doubt you, 1rish, have ever come face to face with any of them. I have come face to face with a coyote once, and black bears many times. While scary, I was not harmed on any of those occasions. In general, these animals are more curious than anything. About the only time a bear will attack you is if you get between a mother and her cubs. My dad did this by accident on one occasion (while hunting), but he kept a cool head and ended up getting away unharmed. The bear was really pissed off, growling and drooling and shit. But in the end, it STILL didn't attack him.
The fact is, even most "vicious predators" don't give a fuck about humans, unless they're literally starving, or you endanger their offspring. See my comment below as to how I am more qualified when it comes to ANYTHING outdoors than you are.

To all who despise hunting: natural reserves and state parks are paid for in large part by revenue generated from hunting and fishing licenses. If I didn't hunt and fish, you fucking hippies wouldn't have a place to go where people COULDN'T hunt and fish. Of course I wouldn't expect city-slickers to know about information like that. I guess I do because I am in the School of Forest Resources at Penn State University, earning a Wood Science degree. Probably makes me more qualified to intelligently talk about this kind of thing than anybody else on this site. That being said, I don't necessarily agree that what they're doing is right (but right or wrong, I still think it's awesome).

Also, I had an internship last summer which paid the equivalent of a $60,000 per year salary. And this summer I'm doing research (paid research) with two of my professors so I can get into grad school. Not exactly burned out yet, am I.

With the possible exception of Virginia Tech, Penn State is the best school on the east coast for forestry or wood science. LSU and U. of Maine also have pretty decent ag. colleges though.

Well I live in Pennsylvania, the state that produces more hardwood lumber/products than any other. And I can say that for every tree my industry cuts down, over 2 more (on average) are planted in its place. We have more forest cover now in PA than we have since the 1800s. Of course, the liberal media will NEVER tell you that, because that's not what sells.

Fuck the pine beetle infestation, we're having enough trouble on the east coast with the woolly adelgid eating our state tree, and the emerald ash bore destroying our ash (no more baseball bats). Not to mention oak sudden death syndrome, anthracnose, and elm disease. We've pretty much got our hands full where we are.
Any who, I've never heard of the pine beetle, but I'm assuming it's an invasive, and probably has no natural predators. Typical protocol in dealing with invasives is to introduce predators from elsewhere, or use pesticides. Of course, most people are reluctant to do either one of those things as they often just result in even more ecological damage. Invasive species suck. Some of our invasive plants in the area include ailanthus, japanese barberry, and multiflora rose. God they all suck.
I know absolutely nothing about trees, or hunting/wildlife conservation for that matter. I sure am glad you're here to school us.
