I lean more in the direction of classical & blues instead of jazz, but this was pretty cool. It's interesting to see the one cat play the solo with 2 fingers. The over all sound made me expect to see Bob Hope on a ship in somewhere in the Pacific circa WWII.
Check out Sweet and Lowdown with Sean Penn. I think Woody Allen directed it. Great flick and if I recall, they either have Django in it or they mention him (it's about a fictional dude, but if you like this type of music, you'll like the film).
thrax: Django was burned when he was younger and his hand was pretty badly injured - they almost amputated his leg also. As a result of the injury, he was left to play predominantly with his index and second finger - with the third and fourth fingers playing on the highest two strings - as they were burnt into curls. That's his brother in the background playing also...
The only thing that kept me watch'n that one was the thought that they were all going to get sawed in half or by a hail of machine gun fire...................
Not sure of the song title, but this video is significant as it's the closest thing to a live performance of the Master. Unfortunately, there is no live video/audio recording of Django Reinhardt.
And...ListenToClutch - read the video descriptions more carefully: The Greatest JAZZ Guitar Player...and were you abused by a musical instrument or something when when you were a child?
1) The fact that they're all smoking.
2) The lights that come on half way through the video.
3) That awesome run Django does with two fingers...
4) The fact that this video proves he existed in the Flesh - and left his mark on the rest of the world.
5) This video is even better when you're stoned...but then again what isn't?
^^^ Really or are you just being funny? The reason I ask is because this dude (while it's not at all my type of music) did a pretty cool solo - Kerry isn't exactly known for that. In fact - no offence intended - but Kerry is pretty sloppy with his solos. I think Jeff has always had better shred.
Most metal/rock guitarist's hide behind distortion. That's the tricky thing about jazz guitar; you have to play very difficult lines on heavy guage strings, and make it sound clean.
Johnny-Ringo... that is one of the dumbest things I've read in a long time.
It's like saying all guitarists hide behind their guitars because they suck at rap.
*EVERY* one of the metal guitarists I know also plays Jazz.
As for the gauge of the strings - my friends play on everything from 9s, 10s to custom (2x8, 2x9, 2x10) and before you try and say they suck, they don't.
In fact odds are a few people who post here know who these cats are; they just don't know them personally as I do.
Admit it, there's only a handful of real clean metal players. Diamond Darrel, the guy from Morbid Angel, Kirk hammet, Marty Friedmann, etc. I don't know any jazz players that use 9's or 10's (With the exception of Nylon string players) that are taken seriously, and I make a living playing jazz music. Sorry buddy, but if you think my opinion on this is dumb, then I question your musicianship.
I do question your opinion regarding the comment you made and I really don't give a wahoo what you think of my musicianship, especially since you have no idea if you've even heard my play or not.
I have made a damn good living playing music and I don't have to do ANYTHING else for the rest of my life.
Whoop-Dee-Fucking-Doo!
After seeing the names of the metal guitarists you listed (excluding Marty) I know I no longer have to read anything you post regarding rock/metal guitarists.
I named four more than you did, and I don't even listen to metal. LOL Lighten up man, your so serious about attacking my OPINION on this. Is that necessary? Fuck metal anyway, I could care less. It's totally dead to me.
I've had a lot of experience with the music industry and music, and I know PLENTY of musicians who "hide" behind too much equipment and gear - from ALL genres of music. It's incredible sometimes when a band who is only standing to make about $600 at a show will spend $300 on a soundman to make them sound good. Or, the electric guy who's got the distortion, Line6, Preamp, Chorus, Delay and etc...
Personally, I'm an acoustic guy myself...hence the interest in Django and Slim...and with regard to strings...I know Blues guitar players who swear by the heaviest strings. Stevie Ray was known to use monsters on his guitar - but he got the tone.
Break it up you two...or I'll post some Walter Ostenak.
Your video further extrapolated on my contention that:
1. Metal guys use light strings
2. Metal guys hide behind distortion
3. Metal is not Jazz
4. Metal sucks
Johnny Boy - Just so you know - I didn't bother to read whatever crap you private messaged me.
I hope you wasted a lot of time and effort into whatever your attempted flame was.
It doesn't matter what you say, what you think, or what you do - I will never care about you or your little opinions.
Having said that, don't expect me to respond to anymore of your lame posts.
Oh, and I watched the entire Jason Becker film - very cool story...I'm surprised I've never heard of him, especially since I was totally into Metal in my high school days. Saw Steve Vai play with David Lee Roth, but I didn't know Becker also did the job - nice company.
Good videos.
Comments to Django Reinhardt Gypsy Jazz

ah, back in the day when "pop" stars actually had musical skills.
is it just me or did that the lead guy predominatly play with his index and middle fingers?
yeah, Danjo was the man. He could do amazingly fast picado scales. Sounds like Paco de Lucia, but with jsut two fingers.
not exactly my cup of tea, but nice for jazz, kind of reminds me of the music you used to hear in the old 1930's Silly Symphonies cartoons.
woah, I recognised the guitar with the moaning mouth on it, looks like that one that posted here recently...

Is Woody Allen really fucking his daughter?
They got nothin on Cannonball.
And watch how they beat women and make it look so cool. hahahaaa, you go Django.
woody allen began a relationship with his puberty aged adopted daughter and is now married to her.
he is a sick FUCK and he needs an incredible beating.
his movies suck
Yeah, and she wasn't even that hot. WTF's up with that shit?

terrible, i heard high school bands that sound better
I thought that Watermelon Slim idiot was supposed to be the best guitar player. Nobody has crap on the Nuge. WANGO TANGO!
Wow some vision to go with the sound, nice. Out of curiousity was that one of his more widely known songs as I believe I've heard it before.

Porno for Django....................................
meh, i'd take kerry king over this guy anyday

King played the guitar solo in The Beastie Boys "Fight For Your Right to Party".
My point exactly. LOL.

Django is great..
...the Greatest.

Can't we musicians all just get along?
Django, like I put in my 1st post - I thought this was a pretty cool video and some impressive guitar skills.
As for Johnny - This is my final comment on the topic.

The classical piece was cool, but he couldn't play it all the way through, so more proof that metal guys can't play clean tone.

Mon Dieu! What would Django think?
I have one more thing to add:
