No, you need a big motor to get reliable hp. You can get 900+ hp from a Skyliner but one slight cough and it's toast, whereas a built 500 cu. in. motor could put out 900 hp all day long.
Sure....i didnt say to push it to the limits...that would be nuts....but HP is a true rating for engines...Take a Cat 3406 diesel and compare it to the same size 6 cyl gas engine. You will always get more HP from the diesel.
Generally speaking, for a given engine capacity, a gas engine will produce more power than a diesel. This is because a) gasoline has a higher calorific value than diesel fuel, and b) the formula for calculating power is speed dependant, so a diesel , which runss slower, will produce more torque, but less horsepower while a gas engine will lose out on torque, but gain horsepower at higher speeds.

Well....all depends on what you are doing with that engine. If speed is what you want then yes gas rules.....if you want power then diesel rules. I would never change my diesel that run my offshore boat over gas....unless i wanted to get out faster. The problem with the gas engines in a boat like mine is the rpms to get even close to the HP i get from the twin diesels. These thngs never get bogged down no matter the size of the swells....
