scene kids is something completely different, and the "emo" subculture is trying to latch on to the name it seems... more and more you see emos trying to refer to themselves or people like them as "scene kids", scene kids are from what.. like the early 80's? thats what started the whole rave/party movement.. scene kids were super fucking flamboyant and would dress up all fucked wearing glitter and completely weird... i think there is actually a movie about the beginning of scene kids (club kids) called party monster.. its surprisingly a really good show ;/

Actually emo has been around since the 80's. Dischord records had alot of "emotional hardcore" bands like Fugazi, Rights of Sring, ect. It's only recently that faggy teenage boys started dressing like girls and singing whiney shit and shortening the name to just emo.
strangely enough, Emo is an offshoot of hardcore punk. in the early 90's I went to a zillion hardcore shows, if you went to a show looking like a tranny wearing his sisters pants, a bullet belt with pink dyed girlie hair, odds are you would probably see a beating.
when bands started getting more melodic, and before emo was a dirty word, it became fashionable and the dividing line was drawn.
if emo kids came to a sick of it all show, it was generally ignored, but you would never find meathead hardcore scenesters at a dashboard confessional show.
the point is, emo is about fashion first. punk is an attitude. It's the difference between metalheads who like slayer and posers who like cinderella & poison. when you got multiple emo cocksuckers on american idol, you can see that it is less about punk then ever.
And why is everyone talking like punk was only around 20 or 30 years ago? There's were lots of great punk bands in the 90's, and even today.
because it's not the same punk as when punk was first around in the 70s/80s... 90s and later punk was more... i dunno... it was different. it wasn't the same type of music or attitude and became itself more of a fashion/labels thing. it was no longer about anarchy and an attitude :(

If you consider bands like Rancid or Bad Religion to be today's punk, then yeah it's weak shit for kids. You gotta dig deeper into the lesser known record labels to find the real stuff.
I'm spoiled though. I grew up with punk and hardcore bands. Warzone used to rehearse down the block from me when I was 12 or 13. Kids used to get fucking hurt, it was chaotic, it was new, it had never been done before.
It's all a joke now, whenever I see a 18 year old kid in Manhattan, with a 2 foot dyed Mohawk red plaid pants, suspenders, docs and a few bad tattoos, it's like carbon copy obedience.
Rancid might have been one of the last ones that I could tolerate.
