America is HUGE it could be considered 'travel' to cross states but im not sure if that brings any more cultural diversity than traveling around the UK. We have more holiday time to travel & holiday packages are common to us, not so much in America; I dont think so anyway. National pride is far more intensively ingrained in Americans at a young age, this could be argued to reduce interest/need to travel to other places. Im sure that if EU integration was further developed (it will be in the future) & passports were not needed to cross borders, the number of passports in the UK would decrease.
See, I can even debate this issue with myself.
I think that the difference in the cost of travel can be a major factor too. I've just seen a commercial for holidays in the Canaries with flights from the UK from less than £20, and rooms for £6 per night. With deals like that, us Brits are far more likely to travel abroad. Just think, for the price of a saturday night out at home, in the cold and rain, you could be 2000 miles away in the sun just off the coast of Africa.
