Hmmmm... I'm no huge race fan, but I do recall when Dale Earnhardt died, he kinda "brushed" up against the wall and it pretty much fucked him up. So is it speed or the angle of impact?

    • supernova
      supernova 2007-06-04T05:48:46Z says:

James, the force of an impact is directly proportionate to the speed AND angle of the impact. The true question is "What was the rate of deceleration?"
Even the simplest of logic would dictate that a human cannot go from 200mph to 0mph in 0:00:02 seconds.
As far as Earnhardt (sp) I believe he would have lived had he been wearing his neck brace during the race.

Surviving 200 mph to 0 mph in .02 seconds... That's different. Incidentally, this guy hit over 1600 G's of acceleration.

    • supernova
      supernova 2007-06-04T15:21:02Z says:

      Smerf, challenge accepted.
In the real world, such as racing and not a controlled environment, the result of such a jolt or "acceleration" as you said, would completely compromise the structural integrity of the human body. I don't know the formula you used to come up with 1600G's, but that sounds about right. I'm trying to imagine a circumstance , outside of water or space travel, in which the human body could achieve such a feat.
Remember, we are talking about instant deceleration, or instant acceleration as you put it.

Supanova, what speed can a human go from to 0 in 2.0 seconds? I bet it ain't much, and bet it wouldn't exactly make for an exciting race. My whole real point was that to slow down cars to the point of being 'safe' would be pointless and make for one boring fucking sport.
If your concerned about dying, fuck off and take up snooker or something.

    • Breadfan

well, what about Richard Hammond? he crashed at 280 mph. Mind you he didn't crash into a concrete wall but apparently when he crashed his car dug into the ground at nearly 220 mph with a force of 6G which is defiantly enough to break bones and necks etc. and after that point he lost that 220 mph in about 5 seconds by digging into the ground. He did have a full roll cage and safety gear however, he was knocked unconscious and had some swelling on the brain after the accident but was completely fine about 2 months after the accident. Shows what kind of things the human body can survive with a little help

Listen Blah, I love racing. I like the danger involved as well.
What you wrote was "your time is up. People die hitting post at 20mph and walk away at 200mph." I needed to point out the obvious flaw in your (lack of) logic.
As for your Question, I would imagine a human could decelerate to 0mph/kph from a pretty substantial rate of speed in 2.0 sec. However, the rate of deceleration a human can withstand decreases rapidly in relation to the decrease in the time it takes to stop.
Smerf seems to have a formula to calculate Gforce, He could give you actual numbers.
....and just for the record 2.0 secs is 100x longer than .02secs.

    • smerf
      smerf 2007-06-04T23:03:39Z says:

Yeah, except I don't know the maximum number of G forces the human brain/neck can withstand.

    • smerf
      smerf 2007-06-04T23:06:35Z says:

And actually, I was wrong on my 1600 G's of acceleration. For some reason, I forgot to convert 320 kph to m/s. Still, 453.5 G's is more than enough to kill someone. I think lethal is around 100, but I'm not sure.

    • MrFugsmucker
      MrFugsmucker 2007-06-05T00:03:15Z says:

I don't think that this is purely a case of deceleration at work here. The car physically collapsed allowing him to hit the wall. Exreme deceleration is survivable in some sort of capsule, but the impact forces of hitting the wall will be fatal. It is the fact that concrete is harder than human tissue that decides the outcome.

    • supernova
      supernova 2007-06-05T00:50:33Z says:

MrFugs, a concrete wall will stop you instantly. Hence, instant deceleration. If the wall was made of flowers or fluffy kittens, you wouldn't stop instantly...
It's like smerf said, "it's not how fast you go, it's how fast you stop.".

    • MrFugsmucker
      MrFugsmucker 2007-06-05T01:13:24Z says:

Without getting into complex laws of physics, you can survive xG deceleration with zero or jsut soft tissue injury, but you can trip up and hit the floor at 1g and break bones. I saw some of the experiments with Chuck Yeager in the fifties & sixties where he slowed from silly speeds in less than a second, producing large amounts of g-force, but if you jumped off your roof you would hit the floor and probably die.QED.

      Ralph27972 2007-06-05T18:17:22Z says:

ok he didn't stop instantly, the car is designed to collapse up to his capsule to distribute the impact force, he also hit at an angle and was thus able to redirect his momentum rather than have it call come to a screeching halt, the g force calculation is just figuring out how fast you have to decelerate to go from 200 to zero in 2 seconds, then dividing by gravity... the greatest estimated g forces survived was 180G, the greatest g forces voluntarily experienced were a little shy of 50

    • MrFugsmucker
      MrFugsmucker 2007-06-05T18:39:28Z says:

Actually, The peak figures would be far higher than those in this thread because he hit the wall and was almost instantaneously accelerated away from it again. The fact that the car is designed to collapse progressively doesn't really figure in such a violent impact.
