i imagine i'd be more impressed if it werent for the fact that football players are about the twice the size and strength of your typical rugby player. rugby is a sport we can all play. football is a sport reserved for the giants, and this, pads are necessary to keep people from dying every week when a game is played.

Just as good as the American football video .....I dont know rugby ....but they are wearing less pads then our football....so its somewhat more brutal...nice.

After watching both videos, the hits are just as hard as in american football as it is in rugby, but the lack of pads make it happen far less often then it would in the US. American football is far more exciting then rugby.

Watch an actual game of both. Rugby is constant action, not constant stopping like in football. Rugby is hit after hit after hit until there's either a penalty, someone scores a try, or the half is over. I've played both and rugby is far more exciting than football. Try it, you'll love it if you have the balls... no fucking cups on the rugby pitch!!! Hooker for Life!!

rugby is just another way of asking god to cripple urself, o yea and by the way most of those hits r like regular tackles int he NFL , just cuz one guy got lower then the other doesnt mean it was an amazing hit, didnt see any of those guys i the air, like zeratul said hard hits are a lot more relavent in nfl

    cru3 says:

most of that was rugby league, and trust me those kind of hits happen more than you'd think. At least 2-3 runs in a set of 60 are usually hit-ups, with the big front rowers running full ball at the defense.

Each to their own i say. As an Australian i was brought up on rugby league, i don't understand, or like NFL. ANd saying the hits are just as hard? lol, NFL players are in about 10 pounds of pads, it's like running at each other covered in bubble-wrap.

Like i said though, each to their own. :)

    2007-01-16T08:31:54Z
    • Phplx4cfq_c1pm

yes they wear 10 pounds of pads but also most of them out weight your rugby boys by almost 2oo pounds yes Now that would be a hit, a defensice lineman on one of those average sized rugby players.

      2007-01-16T11:50:04Z
    • Klf_avatar__75x75_

The point is the rugby player could just as easily sidestep your average lumbering linesman.

      2007-01-16T12:41:00Z
    • 16x16

lol lets see them rugby boys stoppin a tank runnin at em

      2007-01-16T13:49:28Z
    • Klf_avatar__75x75_

Take away the padding and you may be surprised. There's always the chance of a diving tackle from behind given the speed a tank would achieve over a decent distance. Or (and not intended in any serious way lest American football fans see it as a red flag to a bull) they could all just bunch up on the try line and wait for him to run out of breath.

      2007-01-16T14:40:19Z
    • 16x16

The padding in American football isn't designed to protect every inch of the body, just points likely to take or give a hard hit. Plus, I don't think some of you realize the money and training available to American athletes and how much their speed and agility would surprise you. They are big, black, mean, and fast. The NFL has the best trained athletes in the world, sorry rugby fans.

      2007-01-16T16:06:34Z
    • 16x16

i really hope your joking saying that the NFL has the best trained athletes in the world. considering the genetics of most of the guys who play pro football, it doesnt take much work to stay as big as they are. and dick, your talking about a 300 pound lineman hitting an average guy walking down the street, which is not what a pro football player is. the match up as far as weight is conserned is much closer than a lineman tackling an average guy.

    • Klf_avatar__75x75_

Because all sport must involve competitors ceaselessly clattering into each other to count as manly? Why not cut the ball out of the match and have group sumo wrestling?
American football sometimes reminds me of that scene in Blackadder in WW1. "We're going over the top again!" "But sir, won't they be expecting that?" "No, because they won't suspect we'd actually do it again."

The "10lbs" of pads are to keep the 200lb wide reciever from getting killed by a 450lb linesman.

    2007-01-16T13:57:44Z
    • Yak
      yak says:

the padding allows more direct hits, but the way rugby works people get manhandled constantly in the game which is worse cuz there is no padding. both sports allow for pretty nasty carnage but in different ways... i will say however that a 450lb linesman is nowhere near as healthy as the largest rugby players.. .and those guys must weigh close to 300+lbs because they are fucking massive without pads, but they are running pretty much non stop in a rugby game
a linesman doing that would be a fatality on the field from a stroke or heart attack most likely :P

      2007-01-16T14:21:28Z
    • 16x16

There are no 450lb linemen, and I guarantee the biggest football players are in better shape than any of you. They work out every day, are on special diets and under go constant monitoring. They are top athletes despite their size. Bet they'd beat most "normal" people in a 40yd dash. Tens of millions of dollars goes in to building and training these guys every year. Just 'cause they are big doesn't mean they are not in shape.

    BzaWack says:

Rugby is completely different to Football..... Football player claiming their padding is to stop them dying from their "big hits" are talking bull shit. they tackle like fucktards BECAUSE they wear all this fucking padding, its the reason they tackle like that not there to proctect them. if you look at very old football footage they wear no more than current union players wear and tackle just like we do

BTW i play rugby i wear no padding, hit hard play hard, fit as fuck and weigh 285lbs.

take the pads off a football player, theyd suck.

    2007-01-16T17:41:16Z
    • Fight_club75x75

Suck at what, idiot? Rugby or football. They'd still be great at football, they'd just break their noses clean off.

Your point makes as much sense as saying, "put pads on a rugby player and he'd be a great American Football player". Talk about ignorant! Lets put some white uniforms on baseball players and have them play cricket!!

The sports are so fucking different that any correlation made pure rubbish.

      BzaWack says:

ok fair enough i didnt make myself clear. i meant that theyd suck at football because they wouldnt have that protection that they rely on. like i said... they tackle like that because they wear the padding. they dont wear the paddign because they tackle hard. to be honest both sports have their good points, this arguement is a bit petty isnt it?

      2007-01-16T22:41:27Z

I got you, (sorry for the idiot comment, it just sounded better that way) and yes, it is petty. It is also funny though, the passion people show when trying to compare to disimilar sports.

video quality is horrible. both sports can be entertaining just all depends on where you grew up and how exposed you were/are with it. it's all a matter of preference.

that being said, there is no way australian rugby players can hold a candle to american footballers, why? it's simple we have a huge market for it opposed to rugby. what does that mean? financial backing and a bigger population. it'd be cool if american football didnt have pads though even though the risk of hurting your players run high.

      Shep says:

I also played Linebacker for a small D1 midwestern college. The main difference in tackles between the two is ruggers lead with their shoulders and forearms, while footballers lead with their facemask. You don't need pads for a scrum because unlike football you don't have a pulling guard or end trying to blindside your pelvis into your spleen. I've laid hits in rugby that were spectacular, but I was always aware of self preservation without the pads. Football hits ARE harder, but the pads help immensely.
