I work for BBY and can verify we make 50 bucks on that tv. Its the accessories we mark up 300% and people get pissed. Believe me, we make very little on Joe Blow buying a 52" LCD and then nothing else while still taking up probably 45 minutes of our employee's time.
I like when I get to the register and get accosted for five minutes about a useless protection plan for 100-300 bucks.
Those protection plans are a good value if you have kids. I have seen many tvs come back with cracked screnes from kids. Ipods are good to get it for the accidental coverage. Alot of other stuff it is probably bs.
the 'extended coverage' is mostly just an upsell so they make more money, since most electronics that are defective are found defective within the first few days/weeks anyway... most of the places don't have "accident" coverage for tvs and shit... if you go in there saying your kid smashed your tv with a bat you are going to be told to fuck off at any store i've ever been to no matter what kind of "extended warranty" you got...
that extended coverage is bullshit we bought a 35 inch tv from them and when we got it home the screen had a 3 inch crack in it right out of the box and they refused to return it saying we did it ourselves.
yeah it costs more to replace the screen then the cost of the tv. Also I think the cost on the 52a650 at my store is like $100 less then the price of the tv. And the protection that we sell is worth the money cause it's unlimited service calls with no additional costs and we guarantee repair or replacement and cover surge, lightning stikes and dust heat and humidity and the remote
