  grew up in a fanatic religious family, luckily the crazy skipped over, but I still educated myself in religion (the best way to be atheist is read the bible) and tongues actually came from prophets told by god to preach in a town center with people who spoke many different languages. tongues allowed all of the people to hear the word in their language but now it's just giberish... crazy bastards.
