Probably a good idea to show a first time shooter how to not put his hand in front of the little hole where the bullet comes out.
I think the slide caught him, there would be more blood and bone chips if he shot himself in the hand.

I saw one guy get caught by the slide and it tore the skin between the thumb and fore finger. It looks like he shot his pinky finger.
Those "friends" should have told him ... actually this happens a lot of times on our shotting range .. beside those guys breaking their noses with a .44 magnum.

all ranges have eye and ear protection for you. most ranges wont even charge you.

He was steadying the gun with his left hand and apparently the bullet skimmed it with the last shot.
It looks like he's using a forward grip attached to the accessory rail (which is jury-rigged at best) to steady or brace the gun. While shooting, he's flinching prior to the shot (normal reaction for first time shooters) and probably pulled off the grip and dipped the bullet's path over his hand. There didn't appear to be any flesh wound. Its probaly a case of the flash burn over his hand.
