I wonder if there's one like this for all of the children injured/orphaned by 9/11. Ooo! The world is full of shitty things happening to innocent people. The problem with world exposure is that Earth is such a huge place... trying to take in the amount of sickening, horrifying things that happen all at once and then trying to worry about them isn't going to lead to anything but insanity.
Honestly, there's really no real way to decide when it's acceptable for someone to die. I don't envy doctors and soldiers for having to make that decision every day. We all have our reservations about war... having a global awareness now, people are going to be forced with the agony of those decisions. Did you think that this is any different from any other war? Children will get caught in the crossfire. Women will get caught in the crossfire. It's an inevtiability of war. And those children will grow to hate America, and will probably act on that hate... whereupon American children caught in the crossfire will grow up to hate them for the same thing.
I know that every one of you wants to get on your soap box and tell the rest of us that we're pieces of shit for what we're doing to the children over there and that you'll probably read some popular criticist's quote of famous and influential people so that we'll think you're much more intelligent than us. But "ignorance" goes both ways. You may think that I'm ignorant of what my country is doing and why we're doing it, but I think you're just as ignorant for not understanding that this has been happening for thousands and thousands of years without pause, the only difference being that we are more exposed to it on a global level. People over there will die. And, for maybe 20, 30... maybe even 50 years, people will leave me and my family alone.

The best policy I've found for keeping sane "out of sight, out of mind." Personally, I think there are plenty of issues at home we could be taking care of, including education, but that's not my call and there millions of people all over the world with different priorities. There's a saying about the affairs of gods and men... while I'm not suggesting that we start worshipping them, I'm going to say that they deal with affairs on a far greater scale than I ever will. That's their lot in life... mine is to occasionally interject with an opinion and make sure that the next president will hopefully do a good job of making my home country just a little bit better in some way or another.
The reason there are so many civilian casualties is simply because they fight us in cities, in crowded markets, where ever they think is best for them. They set the stage for the fight and not us. It is sad when children and women get wounded/killed because of this but if you didn't notice most of those people were being treated and I bet you they where being saved by the americans.
At this time we can not back out, for if we did we would leave the country in chaos (more than it is) and even if the cause is not just we need to finish what we started, we can not go in and do half the work and be like oh well, sucks for you that we tried to help but before we can finish we have to leave, good luck! I think that would make them hate us even more.
The question is than when can we pull out? When is the job done? I would say it is when the Iraqi military can defend themselves and no longer need training/ intervention from other countries. That's just my opinion though.

This war has less to do with religion and more to do with Economics. And I suspect there is also a bit of wag the dog in there as well.
As for the kids, life sucks, if I lived over there or if I knew those children I would probably be outraged, but I hold the politically incorrect view of not giving a shit about people on the other side of the world. I've spent hours going over IED vids and beheadings and the pics of dead children. This war is the same as any other, as a matter of fact there are probably much fewer civ casualties in this war than in others, the only difference is for really the first time we are getting total coverage of the routine horrors of war and people are acting all shocked like we didn’t know this was going on all along.
And as for those of you who do act like you give a shit, what of the situation in Sudan or Darfur. What of North Korea? Iraq is small beans when compared to the hundreds of thousands of innocent people slaughtered in genocides in Africa, yet it is barely in the news and never mentioned in society. I say, if you are going to be a bleeding heart, do it for all people, not just those you see pictures of on Mucho Sucko.
If any American genuinely claims that they care for the suffering of others outside of their country or political views, they are lying.

War, is by nature, the use of deadly force to kill or "disable" as many people as necessary (or more) to come out as the percieved victor. When this war, or any war started, we should expect this. Deadly force does not always sail smoothly to it's intended target. America has been extremely fortunate in the fact that war has not touched our land for centuries, and we have not seen what war really is. War, IMHO, is one of those things that cannot be taught in a classroom, that must be experienced to be understood, and if ignorance is bliss, Americans have been orgasming since birth. We live a pampered life, with our watered-down media and protection from (and ignorance of) unsettling truths. A short aside in E.R. I saw a while ago put it well.

War is the very last resort, not the first (as my extremely liberal Economics teacher so passionately beat into our heads about 3 times a week). To clarify my position, I am among those who believe it was not yet time to begin a war, especially without a FRICKIN PLAN. But again, deadly force does not always sail smoothly to it's intended target. It is not necessarily the fault of America or her soldiers that these children are dead. It is a fact of life, death, and war. However, it would be childish to state that we do not shoulder some of the blame.

Although I disagree with some (and probably many others) of Captain Jack's opinions, they are not necessarily wrong, and they are valid arguments that many undoubtedly share. So lets keep the flaming down a bit, shall we?
In my mind the bush administration still has not come up with a good excuse for waging undeclared pre-emptive war upon Iraq. BTW, CJ, we really haven't connected Iraq to 9/11 yet, despite our best efforts. Ergo, retribution is not a valid reason for toppling a government. Not having a good excuse, however, is not a good excuse for walking away after we just de-stabilized an entire country. We fucked it up and it's going to take a huge amount of time and money to fix it. Well shit, fix it. (side note: a plan would be nice)
But continuing CJ's analogy of a man coming at you with a knife, if you happen to realize that the girl you are fucking at the present moment is that man's daughter, it might be a good idea to stop fucking his daughter? eh?
And yes there are other issues to address, like healthcare. You can't have guns and butter, you gotta choose one. But doing nothing until you have perfectly universal healthcare isn't the solution. That's like having one hospital in a city without any clinics nearby. The less-urgent patients will never get any care because there will always be more higher-priority patients. War, however, has the same effect inside this poorly-constructed analogy as outside. Many of the patients die. Butter is dropped as Guns becomes the main issue. Starting a war and running up a deficit like this, especially when the baby-boomers are about to start recieving social security in 2010 is not only drops butter, it throws it into an incinerater along with all books and records of how to make butter, plus all of the machines and equipment, burns it, takes the ashes, nukes them, and then shoots them into space.
And on that note, I'll end by making a sarcastic mocking comment at how christians will explain why god let these children suffer a painful death.

Let's skip religious history and get to the acts of the sovereign nation state. Sure you can argue the US wasn't the first and won't be the last to interfere in the affairs of other states but when a country proclaims itself to be the world's standard bearer of freedom and democracy and then goes on to install dictators, topple governments and generally impose its wishes on another country then you have a problem and in turn a fair criticism.
Let's not forget this "shitstain" like a bunch of others was either put there, or helped by the US when it suited them and when it was no longer covenient to the US or the population to it onto themselves to control their country's destiny, the US dropped them and treated them like a pariah. Do I honestly have to list all the terrible regimes the US either explicitly or (at the time) secretively installed or propped up who repressed their own citizens?
I'll make the list shorter by using those the US probably didn't create out of their own desires such as (althought I could be mistaken and these include regimes which came as a reaction to US influence) North Korea, Zimbabwe, Myanmar, China, Russia, Cuba, Venezuela. In all honesty there's probably a number of other "bad" regimes which I can't remember at this point in time.
That said the US did help a number of countries but funnily enough it correlates with <real> international support.
