Wal-Mart is their biggest exporter. Wal-Mart employes vast amounts of Americans. They have a HUGE military: about 2 million active troops with about 5 million available when they force a draft. First, Japan is still (just barely) the biggest holder of American debt in the world.
Holding US debt isn't simply a matter of holding an economy hostage. Motivations for holding such huge amounts equate to reasons such as holding sufficient currency reserves (admittedly overkill in this case) and/or "Bretton Woods II" where nations such as China attempt to keep their currencies below their true value by not converting US dollars into local currency. In China's case it would also probably be due to them not wanting all the dollars coming back into the economy as yuan and stoking an already red hot economy.
China as a rather rational actor is hardly going to dump US debt to damage the US, that would be like those dickheads a few days ago smashing bricks in a house they were still standing in.
And this fixation with Chinese ownership of US debt seems to have blinded the average American from seeing that China isn't the only one buying your debt. The gulf states are getting plenty rich by buying bonds through their mountain of petrodollars.
