They did this test on Top Gear with simulated lightning and pretty much nothing happened, the car was fine, hampster was fine and the car started.

They say to stay in your car because of the metal cage affect. Theoretically the electricity goes through the conductive steel of the vehicle and down to the ground as apposed to into your less than ideally conductive body. However it looks like you may have been a bit fucked if in that truck at the time.

The metal cage effect is a little more complex then that. One whole piece of metal in a 'circuit' a car may not always do this and it only would work if they car did and the lightening hit the metal.

Mike aint that bright. The lightning actually started under the car and left through the engine burning the glass on its way out.

IT STARTED IN THE GLASS. glass is a natural lightning magnet. ...thats why you should NEVER sit in a glasscage in a lightning storm

GryphonRider is right lightning looks like it strikes the ground from the sky but it travels from the ground to the clouds

Things called Streamers i think come up from the ground a split second before lightning hits. in slo-mo vids you can see them. They are the negative energy being drawn up from the ground by the positive electricity of the lightning bolt.
