That's Chaiten Volcano, in Chile.
When erupts thousands of people were evacuated from their houses, loosing everything they own. A piroclastic torrent destroyed hundreds of miles of native forest, the soil and the rivers are now poisoned with ashes and covered with rock, i think that's pretty real.
See, the thing is, AlfaSentFagmo is speaking from the human perspective when s/he calls it a tragedy. From nature's perspective it's a perfectly normal occurrence with no far-reaching or long-lasting consequences at all. What's more, I feel about as bad for the people who lived there as I did for the people who chose to stay on Mt. St. Helens when it erupted. You play with fire, you're gonna get burned.
It was the water that was contaminated, not the soil. It is possible, though, that other chemicals have poisoned the soil which may have been released by the volcano. Only for the short term, anyway.
Comments to Lightning Volcano
IF it's real, I think the volcano caused the lightning.
Real or not it looks pretty badd ass
IF its real, its the Doc's DeLorean exploding
i'm going with real since it's a known fact that the ash in the atmosphere from eruptions causes thunderstorms
And the Doc's Delorean has the power of 5000 angry midgets. So who knows?
It's real but I forgot what site I found it on, but it said it was real
This was a pic by a Nat Geo photographer I think, and the volcano needs a new flux capacitor for sure.
Can you imagine a time traveling volcano? It would change everything we know about science!
it's on the internet it must be real
its was also in one of our national newspapers so i think its real.

Good thing we didn't drill for oil there.
Poisoned the soil? The soil around volcanoes is some of the most fertile soil on earth.
was on the front of the Times about a week ago. i tried to submit it myself but it evidently didn't work...

Thats a great shot "if real" but its way too clear and no distortion. A bit far fetched.
