Solar can't replace oil or even come close. America would look black instead of green from space if we tried. The 'solar panel on every roof' idea is a fucking joke. It's like trying to feed a city by putting a tomato plant on every porch. No one has a real energy policy because none exist that match our lifestyles.

I've done the math on wind and solar. It's not going to work. Solar and wind simply have the kind of energy density needed.
Yes, they can provide electricity to houses. That's great. Even assuming you could run your whole home off of solar (you can if you have near a million to invest), that's still nothing. Here's why: Getting that solar panel to your house requires a truck. Let's say they put it on a small truck, a little guy running on 300hp. The hitch in the whole plan, is how much 300hp really is. When that truck is simply picking up speed after the light turns green, it is using more power than your house. It's using more power than your house and your neighbor's house. In fact, if you live in average-town america, that truck is using more power than your house and 580 of your neighbour's homes are. That's the punch that oil packs. The power to run a few blocks of homes, comes through refined oil send down a thin little gas line to an engine that weighs a few hundred pounds. Replace that with the most efficient solar, and you have a football field or two covered.
The other downfall of solar is the amount of sun that actually hits them. If you live in a desert in mexico, you might get 6 sun-hours a day, assuming you have the expensive equipment to rotate and angle your panels throughout the day. (Sun-hours being an estimate of how much your panel can produce compared to it's rating, so on a 12 hour day that's overcast, you might get 3 sun hours, and your 1000 watt solar panel will produce a total of 3kWh). Most of the US averages 4 sun-hours per day. Right now, it's basically impossible for a solar panel to even pay for its self.

i drove through mojave saturday on ca-395 and passed the kramer junction solar plant
it gets sun from sunrise to sunset, not all the panels but it does always have sun, it produces 150 megawatts and combined with 2 others nearby they produce 354 (at peak of course) most of the power goes to LA and its been there since the 80s
go on google earth and type in "kramer juntion, ca" then zoom out from the solar field and look at how much more desert there is out there. it is possible

You're talking megawatts though. Megawatts are good for running thousand of houses, but only tens of cars. Houses mean nothing energy-wise, except in cold climates. Average American Joe is using up over 10,000 watts at any given moment, and if you assume 4 sun-hours a day, that's a 60,000 watt solar panel they need to replace what they use. Well I can get a 100 watt one for about $1000 at home depot, so if everyone just invests $600,000 in solar panels, we can start to solve this energy crisis.
Of course, the price of something generally reflects the cost of it's input materials as well as energy or labor. I'd be real surprised if building a solar panel didn't mean burning off more cheap oil energy than the solar panel could ever hope to produce. This is certainly the case with biofuels and other BS ideas.
I can't address geothermal energy, or using the tides, 'cause I never looked into it. But the solar plan will help with oil usage about as much as the foreign aid plan will help with healthcare.
