Johnny seems to be confusing "communism" and "dictatorial." There's whole lot more to communism than government repression, seeing as it's mostly (if not entirely) an economic theory. Theoretically, communism only is meant to restrict personal freedom in the economic sphere (no personal property being a big one), but it's never played out that way.
Johnny's argument speak to lousy government, corruption, and (maybe) repression, but, again, none of that has anything to do with communism, beyond their being traits that all communist governments have shared.
And Nazis (fascists) and communists are on the opposite ends of the spectrum (= total opposites), so I don't see how they needed to be brought up in relation to this veedeo.
economic freedom and personal freedom are not two seperate things but one in the same. Marx was a hack of a philospher a joke of an economist and a tyrant in the field of political action.
fascism is not the opposite end of the spectrum. It is socialization through extreme regulation, a European brand socialism. There was a term for nazis in germant before they came to power which basically meant something like 'burnt meat'... because though they wore brown uniforms at the time, they were red on the inside.
Well that's a controversial topic on what side of the spectrum facism is to communism. Some would argue that facism is even more left wing than communism as it openly legitmises force as a method of centralised government. In fact Mussolini was ejected from the Italian communist party for being <too> left wing.
^ Perhaps, but I don't see how you can get past the whole allowing personal property thing. That's a huge one, for me. The facists were all over private industry, wheras the communists don't like it one bit. Whether you're allowed to run a small business, personal farm, or even own your home is an issue that is so central to the human condition that the two (fascism and communism) can't be put on the same pole, as far as I'm concerned.
Mind you, I'm no political scientist, and am not up on the theories which categorize these things. I've never heard about the institutionalisation of violence as a political marker, although I will agree that the fascists certainly were really good at it. I think the commies just had to resort to state violence because their theoretical mandate runs so counter to human nature. We all want to look after ourselves, and our families, before we start worrying about other people. It takes a lot of fear before people are going to bury that impulse.

It's not something you can put your finger anymore over the course of history. Although capital may have remained in private hands it was still under control of essentially a corporate government. It had the best of both worlds so to speak where there was central planning however the ruling classes were still able to own the capital.
What I meant by violence was that facists saw violence as a legitimate tool to impose their ideology whereas communism was (at least originally) intended as a peaceful and internationalist ideology which incidentally goes against the notion of a "communist state." But that's politics for you.
Whatever way society trys to pretend or is blisfully ignorant to ,not much has changed, the rich are getting richer and the imagrints are the "new" under class.

I'm totally with you on the violence point, chairman. It's just that it seems that every decade, or so, a new batch of up-in-coming academics have to come along and turn everything on its ear. It's too hard for them to break into original territory since there isn't any secondary material on it, so they rehash the same topics and keep reinventing the wheel.
It would seem that the controversy you refer to over communism = far left, facist = far right, fits into the scenario that I've just described. Some newcomers to the ivory tower have to make a name for themselves so they are striking at an idea that is very well established. But I don't take that sort of shit seriously, since EVERY widely held notion is controversial in academic circles. It's the very nature of academia.

the thing is that in germany many desperate people (mostly the unemployed) will vote for NDP (something like NSDAP, you might remember them from WW2).
It's not like there's gonna be another Beer Hall Putsch, and if it would fail again. But many are pissed that so many unemployed will vote for them just because they are desperate and angry about the situation in germany.
