Yak: I have DoWII as well, it was ok, but like you, I didn't like the mechanics all too much. I haven't tried it online yet either, but I hear that's where the most fun is at. I liked the first game though, it was a lot of fun. I have a few of the books from the Warhammer Universe, I got into Gaunts Ghosts which is primarily about the Imperial Guard, but I have a couple other Space Marine books I've yet to read.
The Warhammer 40k Universe is definitely pretty cool, and I also agree, the art is spectacular.

I read the 3 Gaunt's Ghosts Omnibus series by Dan Abnett, but like I said, that's mainly about the Imperial Guard, still a really good series. But, Black Library Publishing has a lot of collections. They're owned by Games Workshop, so they pretty much cover the entire Warhammer universe. I would go with any one of their Omnibus books, I have the Space Wolf Omnibus which I've yet to read, they're quite hefty and should keep you entertained for a long time.
Yak, I'm kind of partial to the Space Wolves myself. William King, the author of the Gotrek & Felix series, wrote a trilogy on their chapter that you might find interesting.
I have a fairly big collection of 40k books, Space wolves, Horus Hersey, The Inqustions war and Gaunts ghost are all really good reads.
Btw by big I mean 117 out 145 books that were warhammer 40k driven.
