In High School I would just use a small metal pole like the handle of a socket wrench, insert into the loop area, then pull down hard. POP, someones lunch money is now mine! Or if I really hated that person, I'd through their homework in the trash.

There is a much more simple way to open any master combo lock... it involve half a bic pen and roughtly 1.5 seconds... Good math trick, but who needs trial and error on a horribly put together lock when you can bypass the whole system completely at the latch.

You could also torture and sodomize the owner of the lock until they give you the combo. That's what I usually do.
