Buddhism shouldn't be considered a religion. It's a philosophy. It has no doctrine or figure of worship. It's only labeled as a religion because of it's mass following.

It doesn't claim anything of the sort. It's nothing but a series of ideas and suggestions about the world we live in, which many people choose to agree with. Theories. In no way does Buddhism claim its ideas to be absolute. If it did, wouldn't there also be within its teachings some sort of punishments or consequences if one chose not to follow? There are none. Moreover, it encourages constant questioning of one's surroundings, and everything one has ever learned. Not to do so would be considered arrogant, and arrogance is very strongly discouraged. Yes, many ignorant people follow it blindly, and yes, many people inappropriately fanaticize it. Such is inevitable of any idea that becomes too popular. Blame the people, not the philosophy. But many people also choose to believe in it because its ideas make sense to them and give them a better outlook on the world. It is still a philosophy, not a religion.

It's a faith-based belief system, full of metaphysical nonsense like karma and reincarnation. My friend is from Sri Lanka, a Buddhist country, and in his hometown they have a temple called the Temple of the Tooth. They have a relic, which is supposedly a tooth of the buddha. They keep it in a gold case and pray to it. It's pretty amusing, I think.

So when we learn that energy, like matter, cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed, does that not support the idea of reincarnation? If life, or consciousness as us humans know it, is nothing but electrical impules in our brains, electrical energy, wouldn't science say that when we die, that energy, that LIFE, does not just disappear, but spreads into our surroundings, becomes infused with whatever closest objects are there to recieve it? Or do you believe death is just blackness, eternal sleep, the end of all ends? It's often considered the most "logical" answer, but what's logical about it? How can logic apply to something for which we have no idea? Whatever you believe about it takes an act of faith as much a Buddhism, or Christianity, or anything else. Myself, I hold not to one belief, but accept all as possible, but I guess you're too scientific for that.
Just remember, that only a hundred years ago, the idea of what you and I are doing right at this moment didn't even exist. There was no concept for something like this back then. So when science reveals the next hundred years of wonders this universe has to offer, remember that it's very possible that those discoveries will be things you deem today to be impossible, ridiculous, bollocks, and utter nonsense. The universe has more in store than we can even imagine. Get off your high fucking horse and accept your own ignorance.

hmm, okay, here goes. buddhism began when siddhartha gautama got frustrated with the world and decided to sit and meditate beneath the bodhi tree for forty days and forty nights (aka a really long ass time--not necessarily forty.) the truth of his enlightenment came when he separated himself from the world and delved into his inner self (the unused portion of the brain that we humans have, roughly 95% yada yada yada) and had an "awakening" that he had lived thousands of former lives. he concluded that since everyone lives and dies and lives again, there's no reason to stress the small stuff. he tried to relay this message to people, but they didn't understand. that's where the zen bullshit comes in with 'what's the sound of one hand clapping' and all that. fuckdabanhammer, the religion, and yes, it is a religion, worships siddhartha gautama, because he reached buddha status, thus becoming enlightened. they worship him for his enlightened mind. two sects diverged from gautama's teaching (others labeled him buddha, he himself didn't) the mathayana and the siddhayana. the mathayan is the more popular sect of buddhism, from which stems zen, believes in nirvana, and soforth. the siddhayana sect sticks more closely to gautama's teaching, and the purpose of following it is to reach buddha status for oneself, in which you will reach an ultimate understanding of the world. Gautama said "my teaching is like a finger pointing to the moon. do not mistake my finger for the moon." Christ said something along the same lines. the message is to not worship them, but listen to them and figure it out for yourself. thus buddhism, (and christianity) are bastardized religions. satanism is as well. the core of satanism is along the lines of laveyan satanism, in which we should just give in to our urges, and not resist our true nature. Satan was originally God's left hand man (which is why the phrase nowadays is right hand man) and was told to worship nothing but God. God created man and told Satan to worship his creation. Satan refused because he worshipped no one but God, and said that his creation was imperfect. God got pissed and sent him to hell. the angels which agreed with Satan fell from heaven too, thus the fallen angels. Satanism teaches that humans are imperfect, and "the devil" supposedly tempts us to prove that he was right. to turn us against God. and so yes, every religion turns fanatical. they don't stick to the core of the teaching. it's all a fucking game of telephone. I forgot my point now, but buddhism is a religion. Siddhartha Gautama did not say to worship him, but people do. false idol. the same with lucifer. he does not ask to be worshipped, but some people do. Satan wishes only that you forsake God, not worship him. Christ did not ask to be worshipped either, he asked that people worship God not Him. God is the only one that asks us to worship him. Mostly everyone in my family is religious, Baptist, Mormon, Jehova's or just plain Christians. One is a converted catholic, a bunch is greek-ortodox, one even syrian ortodox. A couple of friends of mine is muslims, some in practice, but most are not. One or two are jewish or buddist. Some are ateist. Don't even wanna mention politic beliefs, the variety is massive. My point is, I've chosen none of these myself. I can understand the moral behind the belief but not the worship. To me it's self-made slavery. But if it gives solitude and strenght back to people in emotional turmoil and dissarray, go for it. Just don't get on my case for being into Satan.
