Fire melts steel, sure, but you have to do it right. It isn't as easy as lighting some kerosene on fire or torching office furniture.
But on that day, torching office furniture happened to work out perfectly to melt the steel (damn, blacksmiths must have been fucking pissed off when they realized that), and that melting took down buildings so nicely and so quickly (damn, demolition companies must have been fucking pissed when they realized just lighting a chair on fire would do as good a job as planning and setting explosives.)

Try lighting a fire in a barrel, it gets hotter than say a campfire correct? Put that same fire in somewhere with higher pressure air for the fire to use say oh... a building perhaps. That fire is going to burn so much hotter because 1) the air pressure and 2) the surrounding material in this case steel is going to absorb the heat keeping the overall temperature inside of the container raising the temperature to higher than normal levels. So you are right that fire alone does not melt steel. But fire in a contained area can possibly get up to the temperatures needed. So all you conspiracy theory holders can suck a dick.

gman, yeah, a torch can melt steel. As you said, you mix the right gases. If you want to melt steel your best bet is to take an oxy-acetylene torch to it. The key there is that your pumping a shitload of oxygen straight at the flame. You can also make use of sulfer to help melt steel, or use a welder. However, I didn't see anyone blowing a shitload of oxygen towards those kerosene fires (according the report, the jet fuel burned up in the intial fireball anyway), dumping sulfer on the steel beams, or using a giant fucking arc welder up there.

The way the girder system is made, they collapse straight down onto itself. Its written into building code.
