The execution took place at an Iraqi army base in Kadhimiya.
The base was the former headquarters for Saddam's military intelligence where many of his victims were tortured and executed in the same gallows.
The northern Baghdad district is also home to one of Shia Islam's holiest shrines.

The government had kept details of the execution plan secret amid concerns that it may provoke a violent backlash from Saddam's supporters with Iraq on the brink of civil war.
"It was very quick. He died right away," an official Iraqi witnesses told the Reuters news agency.
"We heard his neck snap," said Sami al-Askari, a political ally of al-Maliki.
Another witness said: "He seemed very calm. He did not tremble."
As guards took him to the scaffold, according to witnesses, Saddam said: "There is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet."

You know, it's sounds kinda screwed up, but at 2:14pm Australian EST most channels switched on to CNN or some other global news network (as they do when something "ground-breaking" happens, and it was confirmed that Saddam had been executed. I jumped on the net and did a google, youtube etc search for "saddam execution". All I got was a few links to past articles about the impending execution. I added "footage" to the search, thinking that once released to the press, someone would record it and post it on youtube or something. No avail. Anyway, I went out, did some fishing, ate Vietnamese for dinner, came home with a six pack and watched a movie with my wife. After that, with some boredom, I searched again to no avail. As I usually do at this time, I jumped on mucho. Low and behold, this is the first place on the internet, where I have seen this footage. A few days ago, after killing myself over the pain olympics video, i vowed never to come to mucho again, but now, I see that this website, yak, dejavu and the team are the only real "ground-breaking" entities on the net. Congratulations to you! Keep up the good work and post more of the stuff "you can't find anywhere else"!
