It's not a shotgun though .... its a rifle
it does look like the sights from a rifle, and the barrel is rather small diameter to be anything other than a 410, but to answer the question of why only one hole: it may have been a slug? but i do agree with the whole not being a shotgun, and yes i do see the other comments below this stating the same thing, i thought i would be cool and keep the string goin!
Whatever round he used, it looks like it hit the wall in the middle of the splat mark. Kinda rules out the shotgun.

doesnt have to be a slug. buckshot doesnt spread that much in the first few centimeters..
Slugs or buckshot wouldn't get through the head intact. It's a single round from a rifle. Mr Smugfucker saw it earlier, as did Hogmaster. Best guess? An AR15 Bushmaster at its biggest bore. Hideoous pillow stripes, though.

Had to clean up a suicide last summer. The guy used a 30/30 rifle, there was head all over the room. I thought it would be just on one wall but it was on all four. Pieces of skull even blasted through the drywall. I was the piece man, meaning I had to pick up the pieces so they could be buried with the body. Seeing this in person kinda messes with you for a bit, really makes these pics easye to look at.
