not buckshot. When I was in Canada I shot ducks in my youth and always carried 2-3 slugs for protection against cougars or bears. Slugs are one chunk of lead about the size of a marbell that usually breaks into three to four pieces after leaving the barrel.

They are usually very large lead balls or even in a missile shape the width of the shotgun shell and about a third as long as the shell casing. Well I'm a hunter my self and in my experience slugs can and often do break up into several pieces depending on what type of shells your using, what animal your hunting, and what it hits while its inside the body.
First off if your using any sort of hollow point slug, it will fragment heavily inside of almost any animal larger than a wolf (deer, moose, cariboo etc.) as the bullet is designed for rapid expansion in most cases. However if your shooting a solid lead slug, the chances of it breaking appart are slim to none.
I'm kind of troubled as to what really caused his wounds as the ones in his stomach look like they were caused by some sort of buck shot and the wound in his leg almost looks like it was birdshot at really close range...unlikely, but its possible who ever shot him may have done so in a hurry and didn't look at what type of shells they were grabbing before they left the house, ending up with two differnt types of shot.
