Not a case of being poor, 1rish. If you're caught driving over the limit in the UK, you get seriously hit. There is an automatic 12 month ban, 10 penalty points on your licence (if you get to 12 it's an automatic 3 month ban), a fine of £100 - £600 and, when you do get your licence back, the insurance companies hit you as well. Also the penalty points stay on your licence for ten years after the ban. Plus, if it was me, I would also lose my job as I need to drive. A guy at work crashed into a wall recently, totalled his car, which the insurers won't pay out on cuz he was drunk and when he gets his licence back it's gonna cost him over £3000 insurance to drive a shitty Peugeot 106 diesel.

I was out lastnight & on the way home in the taxi, we had to take a different route because the police were blocking the main road. Got out the taxi & decided to take a walk down to see what was going on. A car had crashed into the sigh that display the prices on a petrol station forecourt. The car was fucked & the engine was missing. The entire engine which must weigh around half a ton was a good 100 metres down the road. I would have taken a pic on my mobile but there were 3 people stood by the car. Apparently it was a drunk driver...live and learn 1rish1.
I said I was kidding. You overly sensitive Brits need to chill. I've seen the Drivers Ed vids and even crashed a car drunk before. I know the dangers, but I appreciate the concern.

Drunk driving in Japan. There is no tolerable blood alcohol limit. Anything over 0% and you are busted. The fine for a first offense is like $3000 and you lose your license for a year, I think is how it goes.
About a year ago, a drunk driver rear ended a van and knocked it off the Kyushu bridge and the three kids inside died. Since then, like a school of fish, the entire population of the country has turned against drunk driving in an extreme way. I mean, I'm not for it, but I believe in limits. If I have a beer or two or three. I'm still alright. Basically, in Japan right now, if you have one beer you're not ok to drive until the next day. It's fucking ridiculous. Your friends will freak out and consider you a monster if you drive home an hour or so after having 2 or 3 beers.

People take the train, subway, taxi, or ride their bike. They have a taxi service here with two drivers, one drives you home in the taxi and the other drives your car home. They also do the designated driver thing.
