So Cool. Shape of sound

Sand on a speaker-type thing, makes all kinds of neato shapes as the pitch rises. Not as boring as it sounds.

Ughh Jonnycho, that annoying sound is what made the shapes. You couldn't do it with beats.

I can't even belive this is real. Its like a mathematical fractal in the sense that there is an order to the shapes. Crazy.

    No, you didn't.

Anyways, I'm actually pretty impressed with that. Wonder what made them want to test it in the first place.

well, a similar experiement can be done using starch water (magic goo) in a petri dish that vibrates using sound waves, and what ends up happening is the same thing, you can see bumps form on the surface and it creates different patterns. It's very strange indeed.

it's a fairly common physics demonstration, usually not on such a scale, but some light sand in a tube and then passing various frequencies through it to see where the nodes are (i think the sand builds up at the wave nodes).. neat to see an extra dimension added though

    damn that's badass.

too bad it's not under the "tits and ass" section which means hardly anyone will look at it since it seems there are only perverts and psychos that visit this site.

very cool though. i love it.

I dont want to brag, but I used to see exactly those kinds of fractal patterns in almost every surface when I was high on mushrooms or acid. Unfortunately my last trip which happened 2 years ago almost killed me and left me with PTSD for a while, and so I haven't touched the stuff since.

    once again, badass video!!!!

yah the sand would gather at the nodes because thats where there are no vibrations
im a recording engineer i wanna see what my teacher has to say about this when i show it tomorow

towards the higher frequencies where it starts to become less symmetrical would be spots where the sound isnt that flat of a frequency responce i guess

<<towards the higher frequencies where it starts to become less symmetrical would be spots where the sound isnt that flat of a frequency responce>>

I would guess the break down in symmetry has more to do with the mechanics of the system, rather than the quality of the sound (if I read what you are saying correctly).

As the tone got higher and the wavelengths shorter, the non-symettry of the system became more apparent.

So the tarp or piece of board (or whatever the black flat this was) isn't perfecly symetric. It is thicker or stiffer in some areas than in others, or it is supported a little bit differently in different places.

These differences are too small make a difference at lower tones, but become apparent at higher tones.

It's obvious that the sound is being spread outward to escape the confines of the speaker and set out on it's ultimate goal, to gain equal rights.
