Everyone gets into a lift and faces the door, its what people do. I said on here a while ago (talking to 1rish & Jamiee, I think) That it would be funny to walk in, stand with your back to the door and stare at everyone. I guarantee no one will say anything but they will ALL be thinking 'WTF!!' & get really uncomfortable.
seems they will ACTUALLY turn around and follow what the majority of people are doing ;/
as proved on candid camera like 50 or 60 years ago :P
To test that would be fun but, it would require you to have more people than are already in the lift willing to do what you do in order to influence the minority. My way is easier - just one person, no need to influence them, just make them feel awkward.

I regularly stand with my back to the door and yes most people look a little uncomfortable while avoiding eye contact. Also, don't even try to talk to anyone in there.
