I saw a Mapelethorpe exhibit in Venice before I knew what kind of work he did. I remember a self-portrait with a bull whip sticking out of his ass and a close-up of one guy pissing into another guy's mouth. Not my cup of tea. As far as Serrano goes, he close-up shots of dead bodies are more out there to me. If it wasn't for the undue respect shown towards religion...
Yeah, good taste knows no bounds. Someone at my school tried an exhibit with a bunch of people in various "wholesome" garments (priest, nun, doctor, farmer) in a variety of very explicit positions. It was up for a grand total of about 10 minutes before it was yanked down. Ah, art school.
Too bad. Could have been an interesting exhibit. If art was about "good taste" if would be pretty boring, I think. Sometimes, people need to be shocked.
