One can only hope that Starbuck's overzealous market saturation will ultimately bring about it's downfall.

    • Balls_Malone
      Balls_Malone 2007-02-26T15:36:21Z says:

Think about it though, legaldick: you know Starbucks is full of arseholes, so you don't go there. However, if the chain were to go under, all those arseholes would disperse into similar places, making all of them collectively lamer (if only slightly). Better to have them concentrated into one area.

I love the way he goes on about being an American etc etc Does he not realise that his great country is a capitalist society therefore any company with a product with elasticity is gonna charge what they can its a free market...simply select your target market work out & let ye olde supply and demand do the rest....sorry old man if you dont like it MOVE OUT OF AMERICA!

legal dik. over saturation of a market u practically fuckin own????....their downfall???? as they absorb every fucking coffee shop in the country?? wake up...u said u were smart .the one reason i dont go there is cuz of their confusing fuckin ridiculous sizes grande ...mucho grande ...etc all ..it's like subway..takes u half an hour just to order that shit

      Oranjeboom 2007-02-26T17:20:05Z says:

Dik, I dont think legal means saturation of the market with the product because obviously you cant saturate a market with coffee because as soon as its sold its consumed therefore the market is still there but its not hard to see that he could actually mean that Starbucks isn’t a very diverse company & is putting all its eggs in one basket which even in the coffee business could be very risky because of competition, if they dont incorporate a little diversification a surge in competition could lead them to take a loss in profits and without being in another market they dont have any way of absorbing the loss that they will make & this could easily "ultimately bring about it's downfall" understand?
...so why dont you "suck my balls"

Oranje, you have obviously been attending your first few weeks of an economics degree judging by the way you uncannily recite a textbook. As someone already with a double degree in the field and currently writing a thesis, I am qualified enough to tell you to pull your head out of your arse and stop thinking that after a few lessons of basic micro/macroeconomics you are somehow the enlightened one among us. You are not and I am not much better if at all than other people here. Economics is a field of opinions backed up with nifty coincidences so it doesn't put you much out of reach of the average person in coming up with a convincing argument. Just like you like to recite to us supply and demand and elasticity there is pretty much always an exception hence there only being a handful of "laws" of economics. For example orthodox economic theory cannot explain how the carry trade can exist for so long (as it has done in waves in the past) when you set it against the covered and uncovered interest parity. You can relax though, it's not uncommon to get a big head when you start learning this.

      chairman_of_the_bored 2007-02-26T23:49:00Z says:

Continuing on with what's been raised. Even if the US went communist the price for even shittier coffee to reach $7, given the sort of problems which have been shown in the past, wouldn't be too hard.
With regards to diversification and falling margins: So obviously product differentiation, the well established practice of adding some kind of extra value to a fairly homogeneous product and thereby helping to maintain a margin, is still next week's chapter for you? Just to continue playing devil's advocate Starbucks does attempt to diversify within it's market of food and beverage, it can't simply move into car manufacturing, semiconductors or finance now can it? Besides, the trend is that the more diversified a company the less its true value is reflected in its share price due to the added difficulty of valuing such a wide portfolio together as it can be hard to know for sure just how each area is performing. Do you think shareholders would like the idea of a declining value? Investors tend not to value a firm's diversification. Do you why? Because investors by and large are rational enough to do the diversification themselves so doing it on their behalf adds no value and in fact takes some away due to the previous explanation and also because one section of the company has the potential to still bring down the good parts due to their relationship. Hardly a safe choice for the average investor.

      Ok Chairman ill play…
As for my view of economics its more due to me having an interest in the subject since it is what solely makes the world go around, I have also been doing Business for the past 5 years if you include A levels as well as university so I obviously understand what im talking about (even if I dont go into as much anally retentive & almost completely redundant detail as yourself)
      -
For your double degree and the fact you’re now writing a thesis well done & you may obviously know more than I do, but what you do know that I yet don’t is not going to be worth much in this little discussion & it also doesnt make what I said any less relevant or true.
      -
Yes economic is based on opinions etc. It may not be classed as a science in the general sense but its pretty fucking close when you look at trends, patterns and general effects that one action has on many other actions would you not agree? Especially when you consider what I said & why I said it. Is what I said so unconceivable in the world you live in? Is there no precedent for scenarios like that in relatively recent history?
      -
“it can't simply move into car manufacturing, semiconductors or finance now can it?” ....oh really can it not? Why don’t you go ahead and take a look at Virgin they seem to have done pretty well by going into new markets.
      -
Investors may not be too keen on investing in a company which has shares decreasing in value…well fuckin done! Im not saying that Starbucks will EVER go bankrupt due to whatever reason because it is highly unlikely but as I said before, that by no means makes the scenario unimaginable & so unrealistic its too ridiculous for me to hope for now is it?
      -
…finally I would like to thank you for being a hypocrite by going into far too much detail in order to prove that you know more than I do about economics. You care to go back and read what I put and think why I did? You just went on your little rant to show that my scenario isn’t going to happen & explain why Starbucks isn’t going to fuck off any time soon but.
