I understand the message and agree in part, but this reeks of big brother, conspiracy theory retoric. The dumbing down of this country is a real problem but dont damage our ability to deal with it by attributing it to some massive government conspiracy at the hands of some unproven chemical mind control. Personally i think MTV has done more damage to the minds of our youth than any amount of fluoride or mercury could ever do.

      Fluoride is toxic?
      .
      .

Fluoride opponents are fond of stating that that the bags containing the sodium fluoride used to fluoridate Arcata's water are labelled "TOXIC." The bags contain pure sodium fluoride and this substance, if ingested in large quantities (such as dipping your spoon into the bag and eating it), is indeed toxic. However, simply because something is toxic under certain circumstances (e.g. high dose) does not make it toxic under all circumstances, and certain "toxic substances" are actually necessary for life. Iodine (which is in the same periodic table group as fluorine) is also toxic when ingested in large quantities. However if iodine were not added to table salt, the incidence of thyroid disease (goiter) would increase because this element is necessary for health. Oxygen administered at 100% under pressure is also toxic, which is why divers do not use pure oxygen. Even pure water can be toxic if one ingests too much of it.

To think that the government may have made the decision to put fluoride in your drinking water or use a mercury derivative in immunizations is part of some massive government conspiracy to try and weaken and control everyone is a huge jump of logic. The feasibility of being able to cover up the amount of people involved to keep a conspiracy of that size from being exposed is ridiculous. There is a far greater possibility that the benefits of these chemicals and the possible side effects were/are not well enough understood to be dosing the public.

I don't think there's any evidence that the fluoride in the tap water is enough to pacify people or seriously make them stupid. It's just unhealthy and a waste of money. If you have a city of 500,000 people, they're probably spending a cool million a year to fluoridate the water supply. The fluoride is essentially a waste product that companies would have to pay to dispose of otherwise, so what you get is hundreds of millions of dollars dependent on people drinking fluoride. That's a hell of a reason to keep it going, even if it does cause some health problems over time and worsens others.

Somewhere out there is a guide for US municipalities that want to start fluoridating their water. Interesting read. They emphasize keeping it at the max legal limit, and have a shitload on hand so as not deprive the people of the benefits of fluoridation in case of a supply disruption. Advertising disguised as health advise, aimed at the typical politician (ie, some douche who never studied any of the sciences.)

    • El_Wanko
      El_Wanko 2009-01-20T21:31:39Z says:

Also, in a typical city, people only drink 2% of the tap water. Most of it goes down the shower drain, washing machine, toilet, or on the lawn. So, if they're spending 1 million to fluoridate the water, $980,000 of it isn't touching anyone's teeth where they claimed it would do some good.

A small amount of flouride is present in fresh water anyway, even more so in the bottled 'pure mineral water' that people buy to get around the flouridation of tap water.

I didn't make any excuses at all, you asked why they put it in there and I proffered a reason, and I quote "I would presume that the primary reason for flouridation is to help prevent tooth decay." Please note the word 'presume'. The other point you raised was the doseage, and again, all I stated was that it is a relatively low dose, which it is. I didn't say that it should or shouldn't be there, I simply stated the fact. At no point have I said, one way or the other, wether it is necessary.

I think it's time you started to read things properly, and consider the context before crying about it.

I think that makes you the asshole.

yea, it would seem by pointing out the irrelevant fact that it is a small dosage you were trying to justify it, i might have misread your argument...my bad i am wrong about your statement (to be honest i didnt examine it thoroughly) i do however stick to my argument that you are both a nutsack and an asshole.

If I want to see something, it's usually a matter of clicking on it and watching it in HQ without commercials. I don't miss the tube. I used to pay something like $150 a month for the movie channels and shit and had this 37" oldskool CRT thing (weighs like 170 lbs) and the surround sound and everything. I like the time I have now without it, the space I have in my house without tv's fucking everywhere, and I don't miss it a bit.
