Mark Chopper Read, the Chuck Norris of Australia basically.
Made his name, when he wasn't working for himself, intially as a standover man and hitman during the really nasty periods of violence in the 70s involving the unions (namely dockers union and ship-painters union). The basically went solo. Famously got someone to cut his ears off when he was in prison so that he could be moved to another wing. This might be a slightly inaccurate biography as I've never really had a deep interest in his life.
He wrote some books including an autobiography which suddenly made him an ok guy supposedly. The autobiography got turned into a pretty good film which I've only ever managed to see parts of. Apparently parts of his story are bullshit but the friendly joke is you don't piss him off because of his reputation. Calls himself an artist but then says artists are a wankers. A celebrity who made money off of his reputation as a murderer and a thug and thus upholding a famous Australian tradition. Ned Kelly anyone?

Some bum mate of my dad from the 80s was in the same cell as him in Risdon prison, Tasmania. Dad's mate was in there for Opium use, Chopper was famous for his vigilante shit against druggies. Dad's mate was scared. LOL!!
