Practical vehicles were unprofitable due to union costs. Once the large ones stopped selling, GM and Chrysler were basically fucked.
GM still sold the most vehicles in the world, more than any other company (Toyota included), up until the end. Sales were not their problem. The problem is they lost a few grand on each 'practical' vehicle they sold.
Now THAT is a business model
The only differencce between Toyota and GM is that GM was around a lot longer, which meant the union had taken more power and that they had an huge number of retired people to support. See how well Toyota does once they have 2 people on full pension for every 1 working.
They should have adopted the Logans Run approach to impending retirement
If GM had spent time in R&D instead of lobbying congress to lower emissions and mileage standards so they could keep selling their gas guzzlers that no one wanted, they wouldn't have gone under. It's economic Darwinism, and it should be allowed to take it's course.
They should have gone bankrupt years ago and done it right. Then come back with no fucking union. Pay the workers $30 an hour (more than fair) and that's it. They'd fucking roll over the competition now if they had done that.
When you think about it, GM's problems were basically what we're facing. Huge debt to pensions, and huge medicare costs coming up. They basically did what we are doing... kept in business and pretended like they had a future, until they were fucked and needed a bailout. No one there to bail out the US gov though.

its rather ironic how union workers and shit who end up being the highest paid workforce ALSO are the people who end up getting benefits and shit after they retire... you'd think that the people who needed that shit the most would be the people who get paid the least..

What I hate the most is the bailouts for the union. We're gonna take taxes from Joe the poor fucker making $8 an hour busting his balls, and give it to some fat sack of shit taking in $75 an hour of wages and benefits for wiping off the hood of a car and giving the thumbs up. And then we're gonna make things harder on poor Joe again so we can fucking pay a full pension to someone who has made $90k a year for the last few decades.
They were lucky enough to get a fucking 6 figure job with a high school education. The fucking gravy train has to end some day, motherfuckers.
It's also great how the tax dollars that Ford pays now go straight to it's competition. I can just picture Obama up on stage reading from his teleprompter "We can't allow any company to be successful while another fails!"
All excellent points! And let's not forget about CAFE standards: self-defeating legislation that doesn't understand the science of internal combustion engines. European and Japanese cars get better mileage thanks largely to lax emissions standards. If you want American cars to be more efficient, hack off the muffler. It'll be loud as hell and spew nasty, toxic crap in the air (as well as carbon dioxide), but you'll get a higher MPG.
