The Complaint
17 viewers complained about sexually explicit material
in this series.

The Broadcasterâs Statement:
Channel 4 said that the series was a serious attempt
to chart the history and appeal of pornography. The
content was clearly sign-posted in pre-publicity, trailers,
the unambiguous title and clear on-air warnings. The
series was sensitively scheduled after the Watershed, with
the last three episodes scheduled even later to reflect the
more explicit content of the programmes featuring more
realistic, modern technologies.
Sex, Lives and Videotape described how the advent
of video technology and its lower production costs
displaced films as a medium for pornography. The
resulting market fragmentation was demonstrated by the
Totally Tasteless Video Company. Interviewees described
the nature and appeal of minority sexual preferences
with illustrative sequences from âCentury Sexâ.
The programme argued that this range of videos
harkened back to pornographyâs earlier roots in the
circus freak show. Channel 4 maintained that the footage
of an elderly participant could not be equated with
child abuse. blah blah blah..

The Commissionâs Finding
The Standards Committee watched this series which
examined the history of pornography and its
relationship with technology and social mores. It noted
the pre-transmission warnings and the illustrations of the
seriesâ subject matter. It also took into account the
Commissionâs own research which suggested that
audiences were more relaxed about clearly sign-posted,
contextualised treatment of sexual issues when scheduled
appropriately. The Committee noted that the more
modern representations were scheduled later than the
episodes that had examined art, print and photography.
The Committee concluded that in the context of a
seriously-intentioned documentary series examining
a controversial subject in a non-sensationalist manner,
the illustrations had a point, the participants were not
acting under duress, and the content and had not
exceeded acceptable boundaries for broadcast, when
scheduled some time after the Watershed on a terrestrail
channel. The complaints were not upheld
