It looks like his signal was red/red which means "stop", but the switch was lined for him to diverge to the right. Right before the collision, you notice how they veer to the right? (plus, you can see the switch points, with the gap to the right)
I think that the oncomming train may have run a stop signal. When that happens, every signal for miles around goes red. Railroad rules usualy say that when a signal goes from 'proceed' to 'stop', make a stop within good train handling, unless life and limb is in danger and to prevent property damage...
As for the wreck, the POV you have is for the engineer. The conductor sits on the other side of the cab(the side that appears to have taken the brunt of the collision)
