This conference had some issues that were not resolved. Churchill did not trust Stalin, but Roosevelt did. Many believe that this conference was the breaking ground of the Cold War.
When FDR toasted Stalin at a dinner during the Conference and called him a man of peace and progress, Churchill sat stoney-faced and did not respond. When prodded by his Foreign Secretary, Churchill whispered that Stalin wasn’t interested in peace. Finally he conceded and made the following toast “To Premier Stalin, whose conduct of foreign policy manifests peace” … and then out of earshot of the translators he muttered …”A piece of Poland, a piece of Czechoslovakia, a piece of Romania …”.
Many believe that Churchill’s disagreements with Roosevelt during the last year of the war lay with the American propagation of the piecemeal dismantling of the British Empire, especially in Asia. That is not the case. The main cause was the Soviet Union—its ambitions and heavy presence in so much of Europe after the war. Churchill recognized Stalin’s dangerous aims well before the Americans. He saw the looming dangers and potential tragedies of the postwar world.

His views changed drastically over time, but the idiot Roosevelt wouldn't have non of it. It wasnd until Turman took over at you end that the US took a harder line with Russia. Too fucking late though, leading to the dropping of two nuclear weapons. Simply to keep the Russians out of the pacific. The worlds biggest war crimes, committed because you wouldn't fucking listen.

The Russians bugged the Americans villa and knew all about their negotiating stance and the political differences between Churchill and Roosevelt. Stalin played on this.
OJ...It's a bit simplistic to say the nukes were dropped because of the Russians. The plans for the invasion of Japan recognised huge casualties would be involved, far higher than Normandy, Iwo Jima, Anzio and Salerno combined. This had as much of an effect on Truman and his cabinet than the Russians.
Cheeky, the difficulties posed by invading Japan are precisely why the Russians would have been required to help.
Instead of that, they nuked Japan.
The plans never called on the Russians for any help. At no point were they even approached and no approach would ever have been made. The only allies asked was the UK and only our Aircraft Carriers (because of armoured decking).
It stopped the Japs, avoided the need to bring in the Russians & sent a message to the Russians which Roosevelt stubbornly refused to admit needed sending years ago.
The plans? The plans which were made after the defeat of Germany.
You've already said yourself that it would have been far too costly for us to attack. You think the Russians who were making land grabs would have been anything but eager to get into Japan. There was no way in hell that they wouldn't have been eagerly accepted into the Pacific.
To end the way & keep the Russians out, America bombed Japan.

The plans are in the National Library of Congress (I think). They were drawn up in 44 and you can probably find them on the net somewhere.

It even says on wiki that after the Russians invaded Kuril Islands about 800 miles off of Japan, they planned on following it up with an invasion of the weakly defended island of Hokkaidō by the end of August, which would have put pressure on the Allies to do something sooner than November.

To just prove my point about Russia. The the Soviet Union declared war on Japan in support of the other Allies of World War II and invaded Manchuria. The invasion began on August 8, 1945, precisely three months after the German surrender on May 8. Notably, it began between the droppings of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima (August 6) and Nagasaki (August 9). The Russians invaded & the Americans dropped an even bigger bomb to end the war & also stop Russia.
