“ I just have a hunch that Stalin is not that kind of a man. . . . I think that if I give him everything I possibly can and ask for nothing from him in return, noblesse oblige, he won't try to annex anything and will work with me for a world of democracy and peace. ”
—Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1943
Churchill believed that, because of Stalin's strong promises and admission of guilt over Poland, that Stalin might keep his word regarding Poland, remarking "Poor Neville Chamberlain believed he could trust Hitler. He was wrong. But I don't think I'm wrong about Stalin."[10]
This conference had some issues that were not resolved. Churchill did not trust Stalin, but Roosevelt did. Many believe that this conference was the breaking ground of the Cold War.
When FDR toasted Stalin at a dinner during the Conference and called him a man of peace and progress, Churchill sat stoney-faced and did not respond. When prodded by his Foreign Secretary, Churchill whispered that Stalin wasn’t interested in peace. Finally he conceded and made the following toast “To Premier Stalin, whose conduct of foreign policy manifests peace” … and then out of earshot of the translators he muttered …”A piece of Poland, a piece of Czechoslovakia, a piece of Romania …”.
Many believe that Churchill’s disagreements with Roosevelt during the last year of the war lay with the American propagation of the piecemeal dismantling of the British Empire, especially in Asia. That is not the case. The main cause was the Soviet Union—its ambitions and heavy presence in so much of Europe after the war. Churchill recognized Stalin’s dangerous aims well before the Americans. He saw the looming dangers and potential tragedies of the postwar world.
There are numerous sources, even on the web, where you can read about Churchill's views towards Stalin.
His views changed drastically over time, but the idiot Roosevelt wouldn't have non of it. It wasnd until Turman took over at you end that the US took a harder line with Russia. Too fucking late though, leading to the dropping of two nuclear weapons. Simply to keep the Russians out of the pacific. The worlds biggest war crimes, committed because you wouldn't fucking listen.
The Russians bugged the Americans villa and knew all about their negotiating stance and the political differences between Churchill and Roosevelt. Stalin played on this.
OJ...It's a bit simplistic to say the nukes were dropped because of the Russians. The plans for the invasion of Japan recognised huge casualties would be involved, far higher than Normandy, Iwo Jima, Anzio and Salerno combined. This had as much of an effect on Truman and his cabinet than the Russians.
The plans never called on the Russians for any help. At no point were they even approached and no approach would ever have been made. The only allies asked was the UK and only our Aircraft Carriers (because of armoured decking).
It stopped the Japs, avoided the need to bring in the Russians & sent a message to the Russians which Roosevelt stubbornly refused to admit needed sending years ago.
The plans? The plans which were made after the defeat of Germany.
You've already said yourself that it would have been far too costly for us to attack. You think the Russians who were making land grabs would have been anything but eager to get into Japan. There was no way in hell that they wouldn't have been eagerly accepted into the Pacific.
To end the way & keep the Russians out, America bombed Japan.
The fucking plan. America can't plan a war to this bastard day!
considering german troops never set foot on british turf. id rather say fuck you you stupid americans, since you only joined the war cos you knew you were fucking next. chicken shits only fight for yourselves. so yeah thanx a bunch for getting countless europeans killed when you could have backed us up from the get go.
It even says on wiki that after the Russians invaded Kuril Islands about 800 miles off of Japan, they planned on following it up with an invasion of the weakly defended island of Hokkaidō by the end of August, which would have put pressure on the Allies to do something sooner than November.
To just prove my point about Russia. The the Soviet Union declared war on Japan in support of the other Allies of World War II and invaded Manchuria. The invasion began on August 8, 1945, precisely three months after the German surrender on May 8. Notably, it began between the droppings of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima (August 6) and Nagasaki (August 9). The Russians invaded & the Americans dropped an even bigger bomb to end the war & also stop Russia.

For when Hank gets here & tries to claim Churchill was as complicit as Roosevelt when it came to Stalin.
Operation Unthinkable - A a British plan to attack the Soviet Union. The creation of the plan was ordered by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and developed by the British Armed Forces' Joint Planning Staff at the end of World War II.
Comments to Yalta Conference 1945
Is he about to take out stalin?
He looks like he has his eyes on FDR.
and he is totally unsuspecting, unlike obe
That's why FDR died soon after that.
He should of took out Stalin.
The force is strong in this one.
Darth: Those are not the conditions you are looking for.
Churchill and Roosevelt: These are are not the conditions we are looking for.
Darth: You will trust Stalin and let him keep Poland.
Churchill and Roosevelt: We will trust Stalin and let him keep Poland.

Stupid Americans.
Oh wait...
Stupid British.
Eh, no.
You guys really do make up your own history.
haha
You guys have hardly any history, but the history you do have is fictitious.
Sucks to be you. It's like living with amnesia.

God save the queeeeeeeeeeen.
Still, Churchill would have been speaking German if it wasn't for the Americans.
I've been listening to 1rish1 far too much

Cheeky, the difficulties posed by invading Japan are precisely why the Russians would have been required to help.
Instead of that, they nuked Japan.
The plans never called on the Russians for any help. At no point were they even approached and no approach would ever have been made. The only allies asked was the UK and only our Aircraft Carriers (because of armoured decking).

i say pull everyone out of a iraq and let the americans clean up their own damn mess.
The plans are in the National Library of Congress (I think). They were drawn up in 44 and you can probably find them on the net somewhere.
It's a shame they used up one of their nukes testing instead of dropping it on the british.
No one can plan a war. Nothing has ever gone to plan in any war.
Aren't we out of Iraq? Not even any training troops
Goddammit, Cheeky!!
It even says on wiki that after the Russians invaded Kuril Islands about 800 miles off of Japan, they planned on following it up with an invasion of the weakly defended island of Hokkaidō by the end of August, which would have put pressure on the Allies to do something sooner than November.
Stop talking about that fucking plan, it doesn't mean shit.
The Russians were there, they were going in deeper & the Americans needed to keep them out. Simple as that!
& the plan to invade Japan was called Downfall, it's not hard to find.
^our plan
Godammit OJ!!
I only said it was simplistic stop getting your knickers in a twist about it
Can we kiss and make up?
"No one can plan a war. Nothing has ever gone to plan in any war."
I can shoot that down as quick as the rest...The Six-Day War.
The Jews planned & proceeded to kick the hell out of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria.
I don't understand why people argue with me, I'm always right.
Oranje...I was agreeing with you on Japan. I only said there was more than one reason.
I'm pretty sure that Sinai didn't go precisely to plan as well.
